Action on Access

Action on Access

Action on Access is the national co-ordination team appointed by the Higher Education Funding Council for England (HEFCE) and the Learning & Skills Council (LSC) to support their Widening Participation (WP) strategies for England. Learners and potential applicants to higher education, particularly those from groups under-represented in higher education, are being given opportunities through Aimhigher to:

  • raise their awareness and understanding of the opportunities open to them;
  • raise their achievement and attainment ;
  • get supported transitions into higher education.

Student Associate Scheme

The Student Associate Scheme is particularly concerned with increasing teachers in STEM. The pilot involving 11 institutions aims to raise the attainment and aspirations of young people in schools that have low progression rates and which are situated in areas of particular deprivation. It aims to do this by placing undergraduates, who are first in their family to enter higher education and who are taking degrees linked to science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM), in schools for up to 20 days. The undergraduates work in the classroom, providing positive role models, supporting students in STEM subjects, and undertaking a ‘special project’ chosen with the school to support attainment and/or raise aspirations.
