Project Aims
more maths grads is an ambitious and wide ranging project.
The primary aims are:
÷ Improving the perception of maths by school pupils:
- changing the ways schools and universities interact in the mathematical sciences
- helping students who want to study maths at university find out about available options
- raising awareness of the applications of maths and the importance of mathematics in careers
÷ It will also seek to encourage participation from:
- women
- Black African, Black Caribbean, Pakistani and Bangladeshi groups
- returning adult learners in mathematics, especially part time
- lower socio-economic groups
÷ Wider benefits include increasing:
- the number of students taking Maths A-level (or equivalent) particularly those who have not achieved the highest grades at GCSE
- the level of mathematical achievement of students who study other science, technology or engineering courses at university
- the number of specialist mathematics teachers in schools by increasing the number of undergraduates wishing to train as teachers
Project History
more maths grads grew from a proposal submitted to HEFCE by a consortium mathematical organisations following a community wide consultation. Click here (PDF, 556 KB) for details of the earlier scoping study. A copy of the site for the original scoping study can be found here.
